Srila Prabhupada's Last Conversation

"The cassette was kindly provided by the BBT Archives.
This recording was in Bengali, and that's
why it wasn't distributed, here is the transcription"

Srila Prabhupada: Narayana Maharaja. He will come tomorrow?

Tamal Krsna Gosvami: He will come when we (discussing with others). If we pick him up he might come tonight.

Srila Prabhupada: Hmm.

Tamal Krsna Gosvami: If we go just now with the car. Bhakticaru is going just now with the car. Maharaja may come tonight.

(Someone begins to sing govindam adi purusam...)

Tamal Krsna Gosvami: Yeah, Srila Prabhpada. Should we put a little fan on? A little bit.

(The conversation with Srila Narayana Maharaja begins:)

Srila Prabhupada: Prabhupada (Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura) had a desire to preach all over the world - in Europe, America...I tried my best to fulfill his desire. Now we should preach together.

Srila Narayana Maharaja: Yes.

Srila Prabhupada: We have got experience that if we endeavor collectively, there is great possibility to spread the message of akara matha: the mission of Mahaprabhu, 'prithvi te ache, everywhere in the world. I have contributed to this end to the best of my ability.

Srila Narayana Maharaja: Hmm.

Srila Prabhupada: I wish that my god-brothers forgive my offenses...While preaching, many times we do say things contrary to each other, or we cut each other's philosophical arguments. That happens. Please ask my god-brothers to forgive my offences...(inaudible)

Srila Narayana Maharaja: All right.

Srila Prabhupada: (inaudible)?

Srila Narayana Maharaja: Whatever you will order I will accept completely. I consider you as my Guru.

Nov 6, 1977 Srila Prabhupada's instructions for cooperating with His God brothers

Prabhupada: At least one year. I want to develop Gauda-mandala. So in yoga-pitha they could not build even a darsana-mandapa in fifty, sixty years. So we can construct a, what is called, hall.
Jayapataka: Without mandira.
Prabhupada: Hm. Yes.
Jayapataka: Kirtana hall.
Bhavananda: No. Bhaktivedanta... Yoga Pitha Bhaktivedanta Hall. Bhaktivedanta Swami Hall.
Prabhupada: What do you think?
Bhavananda: With bookstand. Prabhupada has formed a trust, the Bhaktivedanta Swami Charity Trust, and its purpose is to develop Gauda-mandala-bhumi. Prabhupada's one idea is to build this darsana-mandapa at the yoga-pitha. And another is to finish Sridhara Maharaja's darsana-mandapa at his..., like that, to develop the different..., to encourage cooperation between the different Godbrothers in the temples. The members of the trust are myself and Tamala Krsna Maharaja and Giriraja, Svarupa Damodara, myself, Madhava Maharaja and Madhusudana Maharaja. Prabhupada named those members.
Prabhupada: How do you think the idea?
Jayapataka: All of your ideas, Srila Prabhupada, are perfect. I am not someone to offer opinion. But if you ask, I think that actually, especially the yoga-pitha, natha-mandira, that's a very dynamic idea, and in general it must do good.
Prabhupada: We want cooperation.
Tamala Krsna: No more noncooperation.
Jayapataka: Generally the... Even Devananda Gaudiya Matha, they had invited us for the disappearance day of Kesava Maharaja, but I wasn't present at the time. So generally now they're inviting us, and everyone seems to have the desire for more and more cooperation.

Those, whose judgment is made of mundane stuff, being unable to enter into the spirit of the all-loving controversies among pure devotees

“Those, whose judgment is made of mundane stuff, being unable to enter into the spirit of the all-loving controversies among pure devotees, due to their own want of unalloyed devotion, are apt to impute to the devotees their own defects of partisanship and opposing views.” Sri Brahma Samhita 5.37 purport (p.72 in BBT edition)

“So far as your question about controversy amongst the disciples of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Goswami Maharaja, that is a fact. But this controversy is not material. Just like in a national program, different political parties are sometimes in conflict and make propaganda against each other, but their central point is always service to the country. Similarly, amongst the disciples of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati there may be some controversy, but the central point is how to preach the mission of His Divine Grace. If the central point is fixed up then there is no harm in such controversy.
Letter to: Mandali Bhadra : 69-07-28 Los Angeles

“Among Vaishnava’s there may be some difference of opinion due to everyone’s personal identity, but despite all personal differences, the cult of Krsna consciousness must go on. We can see that under the instructions of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Goswami Maharaja began preaching the Krsna consciousness movement in an organized way within the past hundred years. The disciples of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Goswami Maharaja are all Godbrothers, and although there are some differences of opinion, and although we are not acting conjointly, every one of us is spreading this Krsna consciousness movement according to his own capacity and producing many disciples to spread it all over the world.”
SB 4.28.31

“Practically there is no difference of opinion in our missionary activities, especially because we all are deriving inspiration from His Divine Grace Prabhupada Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Goswami Maharaja. I think all of our Godbrothers are doing the same missionary activities without a doubt, but still the regrettable fact is we are doing all separately, not in conjunction.”
(Letter to Bhagavata Maharaja, August 21, 1969)

“Disunity between individual souls is so strong within this material world that even in a society of Krsna consciousness; members sometimes appear disunited due to their having different opinions and leaning toward material things. Actually, in Krsna consciousness there cannot be two opinions. There is only one goal: to serve Krsna to one’s best ability. If there is some disagreement over service, such disagreement is to be taken as spiritual. Those who are actually engaged in the service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead cannot be disunited in any circumstance.” SB 4.30.8

Mathura: September 28, 2004 PM

This year, the anniversary of Srila Prabhupada’s taking of sannyasa is Sept. 28, 2004. He took sannyasa at Sri Kesavaji Gaudiya Matha, in Mathura, India, in 1959. This is the temple that was started by his sannyasa-guru, Srila Bhaktiprajnana Kesava Gosvami Maharaja. Yearly, Srila Narayana Maharaja celebrates that day there, as he also will this year. His classes are eternal, so...so that you will have a lecture to read on that day, please accept this glorification, which he gave there on September 13, 2000.

Srila Narayana Maharaja regularly explains how our Srila Prabhupada, like all the acaryas in his disciplic line, are transcendental, but they play what is called naravata-lila, human-like pastimes, in order to teach many things to the conditioned souls. In the following lecture, Srila Maharaja gives his audience a taste of both Prabhupada’s transcendence and his human-like pastimes.]

Today is a very sacred day in our line. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu took sannyasa and began to search for his brother, Sri Visvarupa. While searching, He found out on this day that His brother had been in Pandarapur, and there he had disappeared from this world and had taken samadhi on the bank of the river Bhima. Then, although Mahaprabhu was observing Caturmasya-vrata very strictly for four months, He shaved off His hair on this day. Before this year, He had never shaved for these four months, nor did He cut his nails. He observed all the rules and regulations of Caturmasya.

There are many items that are not allowed during Caturmasya, such as leafy vegetables on the first month, yogurt on the second month, milk on the third month, and mustard oil on the forth month. Besides this, throughout all four months, tomatoes, eggplants, and several other foodstuffs are prohibited. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu used to follow all these rules very strictly, but nowadays we see that devotees don't follow. Our Guru Maharaja and Srila Prabhupada Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura were very strong in this regard. Srila Prabhupada Sarasvati Thakura said, "Take my photo during the four months of Caturmasya-vrata to show that I never shave at that time. Always keep it; otherwise so many so-called disciples will say, 'Oh, Prabhupada never observed Caturmasya-vrata'."

Parama-pujyapada Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja gave concessions in the Western countries, and that is the only reason also used to shave. The Westerners could not follow strictly at that time. That is why he allowed tomatoes and eggplant, and that is also why he used to take them. And that is why he also allowed carrots. I am therefore also giving concessions, not here in India, but in Western countries. If the devotees there like, they can take these items, but we don't take them. We should strictly follow our proper line from Mahaprabhu to Srila Prabhupada Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Thakura and my diksa and siksa-gurus. In Western countries some concession should be given, but here in India we are very strict. If we cannot follow this, then how can we follow Krsna, and how can we serve Radha and Krsna? Mahaprabhu shaved – after two months – and we follow this.

After taking initiation, Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja, in his youth called Abhaya Carana De, became Abhaya Carana dasa Adhikari. After some time he became penniless, and about one month earlier than this day he reached here – Sri Kesavaji Gaudiya Matha. I requested him, "Don't stay anywhere else. You are my siksa-guru, you are the friend of my guru, and you are a very senior devotee of Srila Prabhupada Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Thakura. I have known you since 1946." He accepted and said, "I will stay here."

There were two rooms here. I was in this room, and I requested him to stay in the room next to mine. When this temple room was made, however, I went to that room and I requested him to go to the room opposite that one. He stayed there, and he used to write throughout the entire night.

He used to publish a magazine from here. It was from here that he established the 'League of Devotees', and later on he named it 'The International Society for Krsna Consciousness'. He published the first three volumes of Srimad Bhagavatam in Delhi, and he presented them to me. I used to edit his Hindi in the magazine Bhagavata Darsana, and he also continued that magazine while he was in Jhansi.

While he was here and I requested him, "You are so qualified, and Srila Prabhupada Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura wanted you to preach, especially in English, and to go to Western countries. You served him by writing so many articles in the 'Harmonist' and other magazines. You are very qualified. Why not try to follow the order of your Gurudeva and take sannyasa?" He replied, "Oh, I used to fear this. When my Prabhupada initiated me, I began to read Srimad Bhagavatam, and I saw in a sloka there: 'yasyaham anugrhnami, harisye tad-dhanam sanaih. Those whom I accept – I make them street beggars.' So I feared that would be my fate. I thought, 'I have a good family – my wife, and my sons and daughters. What will become of them? Now I'm very wealthy; but if that happens, what will become of them?" [*See endnote]

One or two months after initiation he had become the manager of Bengal Chemical. Later he left that and came to Allahabad, where he started his own business called Prayag Chemical. That also failed. Then he started a very large medical shop, and after one year it also failed. Then he began to advertise medicines, as a medical representative. That failed, and he became poor like a beggar.

Then he came here to Mathura to sell his medicines, and in the meantime I requested him, "What are you doing? You have not come to this world to sell medicine. You are a representative of Krsna and Mahaprabhu. You should remember who you are, and take sannyasa. You are a friend of my Gurudeva – a very bosom friend. He is just about to come here. He will be here in about four or five days, so please be prepared to take sannyasa." Muni Maharaja was here, and at that time he was about ninety-five years of age. He told Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja, "If you take the renounced order, then I must take it with you." In this way he very much inspired him.

Soon our Gurudeva came and I told him, "Why you are not compelling him? He cannot disobey you. He is your bosom friend. You must insist that he take the sannyasa order." Then, one day, he and Gurudeva were sitting in Gurudeva 's room and were joking and talking with each other. I went there and requested my Gurudeva, "Why are you not telling him to take sannyasa?" My Gurudeva said, "Oh, now it is the best time to take sannyasa. You should not fear. What was to be done has already been done. Your wife has left you, your sons have left you, and everyone else has left. Your wealth is gone and now you are like a street beggar."

He became ready and took sannyasa where you are sitting, in the middle of this room, in front of the Deities. His own Deity, Mahaprabhu, is also here with Radha-Krsna, and He was the Deity from Jhansi. I was the priest. I made his danda, uttariya (sannyasa upper cloth), and all other items; and I taught him how to use them. Though he was so much senior to me, though he was my siksa-guru, I also became his siksa-guru in this – how to take sannyasa and how to use all these paraphernalia.

Kirtana was performed by Krsna dasa Babaji Maharaja and Sesayayi Prabhu, and so many others were chanting: "Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare." During the ceremony, kirtana was always going on. Krsna dasa Babaji Maharaja continually performed kirtana.

After this, Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja began to preach in Agra, then he went to Delhi, and then he came to Vrndavana, to Radha-Damodara. In order to receive the blessing of Srila Rupa Gosvami, he stayed there, very near to him. At that time also he was penniless, and I used to go there and give him my chaddar to sit on. He had no bed, and practically no other possessions. He was very simple. Somehow he used to make capatis. He would role them and I would put them on the fire and cook them with ghee.

He knew how to make beautiful and tasteful preparations, and he used to teach others. From his letters I came to know that he would cook himself and teach others how to cook delicious foods. He used to write to me from New York, "Please send very sweet pera from Mathura; not less than ten kilos."

Especially you senior devotees should remember his pastimes – how he was a very strong personality, how he preached throughout the world in a couple of years, established so many preaching centers, and wrote and published a variety of books in many languages. He did parikrama of the entire world about twelve times, and now he is ordering me, "You should do it more times than I did." He is arranging everything, and he is always calling me, "You have done it ten times, and now you should complete at least fifteen times".

Sometimes the guru wants to make his disciples look greater than himself; and then he becomes very happy. He says, "My disciple is preaching so much here and there. He is like a father. When Maharaja Dasaratha heard that Ramacandra was very strong and could defeat the entire world, he was extremely happy. When Nanda Maharaja heard that his son Krsna has lifted Govardhana for seven days on the little finger of His left hand, he became so happy and said, "Oh, how my son is victorious!" A guru becomes so happy if his disciples are qualified. My Gurudeva will also be very happy if I'm going here and there. He will shower his mercy on me, and Srila Swami Maharaja is also like this.

In this meeting, his dear senior disciples will speak something in his glorification, and thus offer puspanjali (an offering of flowers in the form of words of glorification) at his lotus feet. After that we will perform arcana (worship).

[Some senior disciples of Srila Prabhupada, like Vrindavana Vilasini dasi, Krishna Kumari dasi, and Radha-kunda dasa spoke, after which Srila Maharaja spoke again:]

I met him in 1946 in Calcutta, when there was no ISKCON. He was apparently simply a grhastha Vaisnava. He had been a friend of my Gurudeva since 1923. My Guru Maharaja was somewhat senior because he joined Srila Prabhupada in 1916. He left his university studies and everything else in 1918, and at that time he fully joined. Then, in 1923, Sri Abhaya Carana De was initiated by Srila Prabhupada – first harinama and then diksa initiation. In 1941 our Guru Maharaja established Gaudiya Vedanta Samiti, and Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja was also one of the establishers. From the beginning, therefore, as one of the founders, he was very intimate with Gaudiya Vedanta Samiti.

When I met him in 1946, there was no ISKCON. He was alone, but he was serving his Gurudeva, Srila Prabhupada Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, in so many ways. When I saw him I was very attracted. This is my intrinsic nature – that person who is a friend of my Gurudeva, who helped my Gurudeva, who has done a little service for my Gurudeva, who glorifies Gurudeva – I like that devotee and I can give my life for him. I saw that although my Gurudeva was a sannyasi and Srila Svami Maharaja was a grhastha, Guru Maharaja gave him the same seat as himself. He never gave him a lower or inferior seat. The devotion of any person is the only standard of how much we should respect him. My Gurudeva was giving very much importance to this person, and therefore I also accepted him in that way. I thought, "He must be someone special; some qualification compels my Gurudeva to give him so much honor." I therefore began to serve him, and he was also very attracted to me. At that time I was very young, only 25 years old, but he used to talk with me in a friendly way.

I know him very well. He had a strong character and never feared anyone. He was like a lion, like his Prabhupada, and like our Gurudeva. He used to cut all the arguments of the mayavadis, sahajiyas, and many other unbonafide groups. He never tolerated their misconceptions and he made no compromise with them. He was very strong.

At that time Dr. Radha-Krishna was the president of India. He was one of the intellectual giants of the entire world, and a very learned person, especially in mayavada philosophy. He wrote an article about Bhagavad-Gita, and there he said that Krsna's soul is Krsna, but His body is not His soul. There is some difference between the possessor and possession. In reply, Srila Swami Maharaja wrote a very powerful article in our Bhagavata Patrika magazine, and it was sent to that president of India. In that article he challenged all his arguments and said, "You can reply and try to defeat my arguments. I'm not writing to you as the president of India, but I'm writing to you because you are a learned person of Advaitavada philosophy." Dr. Radha-Krishna could not reply. Such persons cannot reply.

He also cut the arguments of the 'murghi' mission. Do you know the murghi mission? It is the mission whose members kill murghis, hens, and eat them. What mission is that? The Rama-Krsna mission. They are not religious persons. They are not even a welfare society because they will even eat cow flesh and other forbidden things. They don't want to honor the Gita; they simply give importance to bread and butter. They don't believe in God, who can give eternal bliss in heaven; they believe in bread and butter.

Srila Swami Maharaja never cared for them. He was against their philosophy and activities, and he cut all their arguments. Perhaps Vivikananda had never read scriptures like the Vedas, Upanisads, and Srimad Bhagavatam. His followers are only social persons; they have nothing to do with religion. Srila Swami Maharaja was fearless like a lion, and He defeated all their arguments. He was in the line of our guru-parampara. He used to follow all the doctrines, all the acaranas (practices and behavior), vaisnava-sadacara (pure habits), and Vaisnava etiquette. I've never seen him wearing so many kunti malas around his neck, as some of his disciples do. We should totally follow him. We should also try to be like strong lions – jumping. He was like this. He jumped the seven oceans from India and went to New York. What did he do there? He performed a miracle. He turned hippies into happies. They are now happy. A gang of hippies became a high class of devotees.

He gave a lesson to this world, that even a street beggar who has very strong faith in serving his Gurudeva and Radha-Krsna, Mahaprabhu, and Nityananda Prabhu, can jump anywhere – in fire, over the Alps and the Himalayas, in the ocean – anywhere. He can go anywhere and Krsna will help him. Although penniless, he 'jumped over the ocean.' Somehow he traveled on Scindia Navigation, and simply chanted the holy names: "Sri Krsna Caitanya Prabhu Nityananda Sri Advaita Gadadhara Srivasadi Gaura bhakta-vrnda; and Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare." He never took note of whether anyone was looking at him or not. We think, "Oh, all are seeing me," but he was never like that. Sometimes hippies used to dance to his singing. They sometimes offered him a bottle of wine or cigarettes and addressed him, "O my friend." They were very quickly attracted to him and they gradually gave up everything else.

He never made any compromise, especially with the babajis of Radha-kunda who speak sahajiya philosophy. He was like my Gurudeva and his Prabhupada. Nowadays, however, so many are going to Radha-kunda and taking babaji-vesa (the dress, mood, and behavior of the babajis) from the babajis who are not actually following Mahaprabhu. So many ISKCON members are also doing this. What becomes of them? They also become like those bogus babajis So we should try to be like Srila Swami Maharaja and follow his process, line and instruction.

He used to say that if a blind person and a lame person travel together, they can go anywhere they like. The blind person will take the lame person on his shoulders. The lame person has eyes and he will say, "You should go this way and that way." The blind person will walk and the lame person will direct. The western world is blind and India is lame. What is the meaning? India has no source of wealth to preach this mission throughout the world. It has eyes but no legs; it is so lame. America and all western countries are very wealthy, but they have no eyes. If both combine and cooperate, we can preach this mission to the entire world.

He used to say, "Bombay is my office, Mayapura is my sadhana-bhumi or place of sadhana-bhajana, and my home is Vrndavana." That is why he came to Vrndavana in his final days and took samadhi there – in his home, in Vrndavana – in Goloka Vrndavana. I don't know why he was so pleased with me that he always used to love me so much. He gave me so many occasions in which I have fully served him. He was very much attracted to me, and it was my fortune that he gave me so many orders to serve him. He told me, as his last service, "Put me in samadhi with your own hands." There were so many god-brothers who were very scholarly and very high-class. And there were more than a hundred very qualified GBC and all others. I had never gone to a university, or anything like that. Still he had so much faith in me, and therefore he ordered me in this way. And I followed his instructions.

He also told me, "You should try to help my devotees. I brought them, but I could not train them fully due to their inability to fully accept my instructions." Then I called Tamal Krsna, Brahmananda, Bhagavan, Kirtananda, and so many others, and I told them, "Don't quarrel after his departure. You should not think that he will die. A Guru like him never dies. He is always in this world. He is eternally present. So if you want to serve him, you should try to preach his mission all over the world – as he wanted. Don't quarrel for position, name and fame, wealth, or disciples. I know that after the disappearance of a high class of acarya, some quarrel, and some problems come. But I think that you are qualified persons, and you should therefore not quarrel for all these things. Try to give respect to all the disciples of Srila Swami Maharaja, regardless of whether they are senior or junior. You should be very liberal to all, and then you can protect his mission. Otherwise you can destroy his whole mission. I know that you have learned something – how to make money. I know that He has trained you all how, very easily, in a moment, to make so much money. But I think that you'll have to learn more. You will have to learn what are his intrinsic moods, why he descended here from that world, and what was his mission. You should try to understand this. His mission was the same as that of Mahaprabhu. 'Anarpita carim carat' – this mission. And they both did it through sankirtana.

"You know what is kirtana, but you do not know what is real kirtana of the heart. You do not know what is the pure name. If the pure name manifests, a man is totally changed. Love and affection comes for all, even for creepers, trees and everything else. There will be no quarreling, and then you will be 'trnad api sunicena, taror api sahisnuna, amanina manadena, kirtaniya sada harih.' Then I will think that you know his intrinsic mood and you are following that."

If they will honor all devotees, I think that all will return. But if they are not giving honor and respect to the devotees, no one will join them. Even a dog knows. If you will call, "O too too too," he will come. All can understand if you have bhakti in your heart and honor for all devotees. As Srila Rupa Gosvami has told: krneti yasya giri tam manasadriyeta, diksasti cet pranatibhis ca bhajantam isam. We should try to honor all, according to their qualification in bhakti, and then everyone will be trained and no one will fall. Otherwise, all are going to fall down. If anyone has a strong personality like your Prabhupada, serving Gurudeva and preaching like him, he will be very high class of devotee.

So it was on this day that your Prabhupada took the renounced order from here, and he preached over the entire world in a couple of years. This miracle cannot be seen anywhere else. He was one of the arms of Srila Prabhupada Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura and Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura, and they predicted his coming. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura has written, "I think that within a very few years, thousands of western devotees, wearing sikhas, tulsi malas, and chanting Hare Krsna, will join Indian devotees. Both will chant and dance together." This is what we are now seeing everywhere.

So we should chant and remember in the proper line, and all other things we will come automatically. The maha-mantra, Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, is Radha and Krsna Themselves, and Mahaprabhu Himself. If we are chanting and remembering with sadacara, proper behavior, we will achieve the goal very soon. Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja is showering his blessings upon all those who, although having left Krsna consciousness, are now coming again to this Krsna consciousness movement.

What is the real meaning of ISKCON, International Society for Krishna Consciousness? Krsna-bhakti-rasa bhavita matih-"Pure devotional service in Krsna consciousness cannot be had even by pious activity in vaidhi-bhakti for hundreds and thousands of lives. It can only be attained by paying one price – the intense greed to obtain it. If it is available anywhere, one should purchase it without delay." (C.c.Mad.8.70).] If anyone is following this principle, then he is an ISKCON member in the real sense; otherwise not. So we should try to know his mood – krsna-bhakti rasa bhavita matih. If our hearts are saturated with the bhakti-rasa of Vrndavana, then we are ISKCON members in the truest sense. If anyone is falling down, he was never a real ISKCON member, because anyone who has a taste in bhakti-rasa will never fall down. A true ISKCON member can never fall down.

[*Endnote: A note to those readers who are newly getting to know Srila Prabhupada Bhaktivedanta Swami: Srila Narayana Maharaja is describing here, and in other places in this lecture, Srila Prabhupada's naravata-lila, his human-like pastimes. Prabhupada was never a struggling conditioned soul. He descended from Krsna's abode; but he showed by example, for our benefit, how we can gradually develop faith and become pure devotees.]

[Sept 3, 2010 is the anniversary of Srila Prabhupada Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja’s divine appearance day. Below is an excerpt from Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Maharaja’s classes, which he gave in October 5th, 2004, and September 13th, 2000 , glorifying Srila Prabhupada. (Please also note the erratum below the lectures):]

The Same Mission

Why are devotees from so many countries assembled here? I think it was the desire of Sri Krsna, in the form of Sri Sacinandana Gaurahari and Sri Nityananda Prabhu.

prthivite ache yata nagaradi-grama
sarvatra pracara haibe mora nama
(Caitanya-bhagavata Antya 4.126)
["In every town and village, the chanting of My name will be heard.”]

This was the mission, but why? What was the reason for their coming?

Srila Maharaja interjects a request: If any senior devotees, disciples of Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja are sitting or standing at the back, they should come and sit in front.

What was the mission of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Srila Rupa Gosvami, Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada and Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada? They all had the same mission, and I am also coming for this same preaching mission. I am very grateful to Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja that he gave me service. I have known him since 1946. I think most of you here were not yet born. I have been serving him since that time. As you may know, he and I have so many relationships. He was my transcendental siksa-guru, he was junior in sannyasa to me, and we were bosom friends. We have so many transcendental relations and you can read about this in the book called “My Siksa Guru and Priya Bandhu”, compiled by Mula-prakrti didi. Our mission is the same.

Perhaps you all know this, but there are some newcomers who do not. In his last days, in Vrndavana, Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja called me to see him. At that time he had stopped talking to anyone. When he saw me, however, he took my hands in his and at once sat up from his bed and wanted to give me a seat there. I requested him to stay as he was.
Pure devotees are so humble. He told me, “I have committed many offenses to you and to my god-brothers, saying that they only sleep and take prasadam. I said they do nothing but ring bells in the temple. This was wrong. I know that you are most qualified. I have not taken sannyasa from your Gurudeva (Srila Bhaktiprajnana Kesava Gosvami Maharaja) as a formality, but for bhajana-sadhana.”

There were so many seniors, like Pujyapada Bhakti Raksaka Sridhara Maharaja and Srila Vana Maharaja and others, but Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada sprinkled so much mercy on Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada by telling him, “Your English is perfect, you are a poet and preacher, you play mrdaìga and you can do everything. You are qualified to preach this mission in the West.”

Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada thus sent his own “hand” to Western and Eastern countries. In a couple of years your Srila Prabhupada established preaching centers in American cities like New York, New Jersey, Los Angeles and San Francisco, European countries, Australia and everywhere – in the mountains, on islands in oceans, and perhaps in every atom. You are spiritual atoms.

He told me on that day, “Please excuse me; I have committed some offenses. Please tell my god-brothers that they are very qualified, and in some sense they are more qualified then I am. I have preached Sriman Mahaprabhu’s mission everywhere and I have collected thousands of disciples throughout the world; but due to their lack of capacity to receive, I could not fully train them.” And in Bengali he said, “I have collected some monkeys.” He told me this in Bengali, so that certain disciples would not understand and thus become upset but the tape recorder captured every word.

I told him, “You did not commit any kind of offense. You told this to your neophyte disciples, because that was what they needed at the time, for their inspiration to serve and preach. There is nothing to excuse.” He then ordered me, “You should give me samadhi with your own hands. I want it done by you not by anyone else.” And I did so. He told me at that time to help his devotees, and for that reason I have come here to the West. I have come especially to help the senior-most devotees of Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja. There are so many hundreds, like Padmanabha Maharaja, Bhudhara, Bhagavata and Krparama, and so many ladies. They are all directly related to him.

I told him not to be worried, because I would fulfill his order. I am coming to the West to please him, to serve his order and to see his glory – how he preached this mission all over the world in a couple of years - in oceans, on the tops of mountains and hills, in forests and in so many other places. I think that you have come to me by his mercy – through reading his books and hearing hari-katha from any of his disciples. I am successful in preaching because I have a relation with him and he has accepted my service. In a couple of years I have circled the world sixteen times. He circled the world fourteen times. By the mercy of the father, the son and disciple can appear to do more than him.

Caturmasya-vrata

Today is a very sacred day in our line. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu had taken sannyasa and had begun to search for his brother, Sri Visvarupa. While searching, He found out that on this day His brother had been in Pandarapura, and there he had disappeared from this world and had taken samadhi on the bank of the river Bhima. Then, although Mahaprabhu was observing Caturmasya-vrata very strictly for four months, He shaved off His hair on this day. Before this year, He had never shaved during these four months, nor did He cut His nails. He observed all the rules and regulations of Caturmasya.a

There are many items that are not allowed during Caturmasya, such as leafy vegetables in the first month, yogurt in the second month, milk in the third month, and mustard oil in the forth month. Besides this, throughout all four months, tomatoes, eggplants, and several other foodstuffs are prohibited. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu would follow all these rules very strictly, but nowadays we see that devotees don’t follow. Our Guru Maharaja, Srila Bhakti Prajnana Kesava Gosvami Maharaja, and Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada were very strong in this regard. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada said, “Take my photo during the four months of Caturmasya-vrata to show that I never shave at that time. Always keep it; otherwise so many so-called disciples will say, ‘Oh, Prabhupada never observed Caturmasya-vrata’.”

Parama-pujyapada Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja gave concessions in the Western countries, and that is the only reason he also would shave. The Westerners could not follow strictly at that time. That is why he allowed tomatoes and eggplant, and that is also why he would take them. And that is why he also allowed carrots. I am therefore also giving concessions, not here in India, but in Western countries. If the devotees there like, they can take these items, but we don’t take them. We should strictly follow our proper line from Mahaprabhu to Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada and my diksa and siksa-gurus. In Western countries some concession should be given, but here in India we are very strict. If we cannot follow this, then how can we follow Krsna, and how can we serve Radha and Krsna? Mahaprabhu shaved – after two months – and we follow this.

Taking Sannyasa

After taking initiation, Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja, who, in his youth was known as Abhaya Carana De, became Abhaya Carana dasa Adhikari. After some time he became penniless; then he arrived here – Sri Kesavaji Gaudiya Matha – about one month prior to this day. I requested him, “Don’t stay anywhere else. You are my siksa-guru, you are the friend of my guru, and you are a very senior devotee of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada. I have known you since 1946.” He accepted and said, “I will stay here.”

There were two rooms here. I was in this room, and I requested him to stay in the room next to mine. When this temple room was made, however, I went to that room and I requested him to go to the room opposite that one. He stayed there, and he would write the entire night.

He would publish a magazine from here. It was from here that he established the ‘League of Devotees’, and later on he named it ‘The International Society for Krsna Consciousness.’ He published the first three volumes of Srimad-Bhagavatam in Delhi, and he presented them to me. I would edit his Hindi in the magazine Bhagavata Darsana, and he also continued that magazine while he was in Jhansi.

While he was here I requested him, “You are so qualified, and Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada wanted you to preach, especially in English, and to go to Western countries. You served him by writing so many articles in the Harmonist and other magazines. You are very qualified. Why not try to follow the order of your Gurudeva and take sannyasa?” He replied,

“Oh, I used to fear this. When my Prabhupada initiated me, I began to read Srimad-Bhagavatam, and I saw in a sloka there:

sri-bhagavan uvaca
yasyaham anugrhnami
harisye tad-dhanam sanaih
tato ’dhanam tyajanty asya
svajana duhkha-duhkhitam
(Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.88.8)

["The Personality of Godhead said: If I especially favor someone, I gradually deprive him of his wealth. Then the relatives and friends of such a poverty-stricken man abandon him. In this way he suffers one distress after another.”]

“‘Those whom I accept, I make them street beggars.’ So I feared that would be my fate. I thought, ‘I have a good family – my wife, and my sons and daughters. What will become of them? Now I’m very wealthy; but if that happens, what will become of them?”

One or two months after taking initiation he became the manager of Bengal Chemical. Later he left that and came to Allahabad, where he started his own business called Prayaga Chemical.

That business failed. Then he started a very large medical shop, and after one year it also failed. Then he began to advertise medicines, as a medical representative. That failed, and he became poor like a beggar.

Then he came here to Mathura to sell his medicines, and in the meantime I requested him, “What are you doing? You have not come to this world to sell medicine. You are a representative of Krsna and Mahaprabhu. You should remember who you are, and take sannyasa. You are a friend of my Gurudeva – a very bosom friend. He is just about to come here. He will be here in about four or five days, so please be prepared to take sannyasa.” Muni Maharaja was here, and at that time he was about ninety-five years of age. He told Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja, “If you take the renounced order, then I must take it with you.” In this way he very much inspired him.

Soon our Gurudeva came and I told him, “Why are you not compelling him? He cannot disobey you. He is your bosom friend. You must insist that he take the sannyasa order.” Then, one day, Gurudeva and Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja were sitting in Gurudeva‘s room and were joking and talking with each other. I went there and requested my Gurudeva, “Why are you not telling him to take sannyasa?” My Gurudeva said, “Oh, now it is the best time to take sannyasa. You should not fear. What was to be done has already been done. Your wife has left you, your sons have left you, and everyone else has left. Your wealth is gone and now you are like a street beggar.”

He became ready and took sannyasa where you are sitting, in the middle of this room, in front of the Deities. His own Deity, Mahaprabhu, is also here with Radha-Krsna, the Deity from Jhansi.

I was the priest. I made his danda, uttariya (sannyasa upper cloth), and all other items; and I taught him how to use them. Though he was so much senior to me, though he was my siksa-guru, I also became his siksa-guru in this – how to take sannyasa and how to use all these paraphernalia.

Kirtana was performed by Srila Krsna dasa Babaji Maharaja and Sesasayi Prabhu, and so many others were chanting: “Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.” During the ceremony, kirtana was always going on.

At that time also he was penniless. I would go there and gave him my chadar to sit on. He had no bed, and practically no other possessions. He was very simple. Somehow he would make capatis. He would roll them and I would put them on the fire and cook them with ghee.

He knew how to make beautiful and tasteful preparations, and he would teach others. From his letters I came to know that he himself would cook and teach others how to cook delicious preparations. He would write to me from New York, “Please send very sweet pera from Mathura; not less than ten kilos.”

Especially you senior devotees should remember his pastimes – how he was a very strong personality, how he preached throughout the world in a couple of years, established so many preaching centers, and wrote and published a variety of books in many languages. He did parikrama of the entire world about twelve times, and now he is ordering me, “You should do it more times than I did.” He is arranging everything, and he is always calling me, “You have done it ten times, and now you should complete at least fifteen times”.

Sometimes the guru wants to make his disciples look greater than himself; and then he becomes very happy. He says, “My disciple is preaching so much here and there.” He is like a father. When Maharaja Dasaratha heard that Ramacandra was very strong and could defeat the entire world, he was extremely happy. When Nanda Maharaja heard that his son Krsna has lifted Govardhana for seven days on the little finger of His left hand, he became so happy and said, “Oh, how my son is victorious!” A guru becomes so happy if his disciples are qualified. My Gurudeva will also be very happy if I’m going here and there. He will shower his mercy on me, and Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja is also like this.

In this meeting, his dear senior disciples will speak something in his glorification, and thus offer puspanjali at his lotus feet. After that we will perform arcana.

At Srila Maharaja’s request, some senior disciples of Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja spoke (such as Vrndavana Vilasini dasi, Krsna Kumari dasi and Radha-kunda dasa), after which Srila Maharaja continued:

Bosom Friends

I met Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja in 1946 in Calcutta, before ISKCON was established. He was apparently simply a grhastha Vaisnava. He had been a friend of my Gurudeva’s since 1923. My Gurudeva was somewhat senior because he joined Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada in 1916.

He was alone, but he was serving his Gurudeva, Srila Prabhupada, in so many ways. When I saw him I was very attracted. This is my intrinsic nature – that person who is a friend of my Gurudeva, who helped my Gurudeva, who has done a little service for my Gurudeva, who glorifies my Gurudeva – I like that devotee very much and can give my life for him. I saw that although my Gurudeva was a sannyasi and Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja was a grhastha, Gurudeva gave him the same seat as himself. He never gave him a lower or inferior seat. The devotion of any person is the only standard of how much we should respect him. My Gurudeva was giving very much importance to this person, and therefore I also accepted him in that way. I thought, “He must be someone special; some qualification compels my Gurudeva to honor him so much.” I therefore began to serve him, and he was also very attracted to me. At that time I was very young, only twenty-five years old, but he would talk with me in a friendly way.

He Was Fearless

I know him very well. He had a strong character and never feared anyone. He was like a lion, like his Prabhupada, and like our Gurudeva. He would cut all the arguments of the mayavadis, sahajiyas, and many other non-bona fide groups. He never tolerated their misconceptions and he made no compromise with them. He was very strong.

At that time Dr. Radha-Krishna was the president of India. He was one of the intellectual giants of the entire world, and a very learned person, especially in mayavada philosophy. He wrote an article about Bhagavad-gita, and there he said that Krsna’s soul is Krsna, but His body is not His soul. There is some difference between the possessor and possession. In reply, Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja wrote a very powerful article in our Bhagavata Patrika magazine, and it was sent to that president of India. In that article he challenged all his arguments and said, “You can reply and try to defeat my arguments. I’m not writing to you as the president of India, but I’m writing to you because you are a learned person of Advaitavada philosophy (the philosophy of absolute oneness taught by Saìkaracarya, and whose conclusion is advaita-siddhanta).”

Dr. Radha-Krishna could not reply. Such persons cannot reply.

He also cut the arguments of the ‘murghi’ mission. Do you know the murghi mission? It is the mission whose members kill murghis, hens, and eat them. What mission is that? The Rama-Krsna mission – they are not religious persons. They are not even a welfare society because they will even eat cow flesh and other forbidden things. They don’t want to honor the Gita; they simply give importance to bread and butter. They don’t believe in God, who can give eternal bliss in heaven; they believe in bread and butter.

Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja never cared for them. He was against their philosophy and activities, and he cut all their arguments. Perhaps Vivekananda had never read scriptures like the Vedas, Upanisads, and Srimad-Bhagavatam. His followers are only social persons; they have nothing to do with religion. Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja was fearless like a lion, and he defeated all their arguments. He was in the line of our guru-parampara. He would follow all the doctrines, all the acaranas (practices and behavior), vaisnava-sadacara (pure habits), and Vaisnava etiquette. I’ve never seen him wearing so many kanti-malas around his neck, as some of his disciples do. We should totally follow him.

We should also try to be like strong lions. He was like this. He jumped the seven oceans from India and went to New York. What did he do there? He performed a miracle. He turned hippies into ’happies.’ They are now happy.

Although penniless, he ‘jumped over the ocean.’ Somehow he traveled on the Scindia Navigation, and simply chanted the holy names of the Panca-tattva: Sri-krsna-caitanya prabhu-nityananda Sri-advaita gadadhara Srivasadi-gaura-bhakta-vrnda; and the Maha-mantra: Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. He never took note of whether anyone was looking at him or not. We think, “Oh, all are seeing me,” but he was never like that. Sometimes hippies used to dance to his singing. They sometimes offered him a bottle of wine or cigarettes and addressed him, “O my friend.” They were very quickly attracted to him and they gradually gave up everything else.

He never made any compromise, especially with the babajis of Radha-kunda who speak sahajiya philosophy. He was like my Gurudeva and his Prabhupada. Nowadays, however, so many are going to Radha-kunda and taking babaji-vesa from the babajis who are not actually following Mahaprabhu. So many ISKCON members are also doing this. What becomes of them? They will also become like those bogus babajis. We should try to be like Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja and follow his process, line and instruction.

The Blind and the Lame

He would say that if a blind person and a lame person travel together, they can go anywhere they like. The blind person will take the lame person on his shoulders. The lame person has eyes and he will say, “You should go this way and that way.” The blind person will walk and the lame person will direct. The western world is blind and India is lame. What is the meaning? India has no source of wealth to preach this mission throughout the world. It has eyes but no legs; it is so lame. America and all western countries are very wealthy, but they have no eyes. If both combine and co-operate, we can preach this mission to the entire world.

Put Me in Samadhi

Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja would say, “Bombay is my office, Mayapura is my sadhana-bhumi or place of sadhana-bhajana, and my home is Vrndavana.” That is why he came to Vrndavana in his final days and took samadhi there – in his home, in Vrndavana – Goloka Vrndavana.

I don’t know why he was so pleased with me that he always loved me so much. He gave me so many occasions in which I was able to fully serve him. He was very much attracted to me, and it was my good fortune that he gave me so many orders to serve him. He told me, as his last service, “Put me in samadhi with your own hands.” There were so many god-brothers who were very scholarly and very high-class. And there were more than a hundred very qualified GBC and others. I had never been to university or anything like that. Still he had so much faith in me, and therefore he ordered me in this way – and I followed his instructions.

Don’t Quarrel

He also told me, “You should try to help my devotees. I brought them, but I could not train them fully due to their inability to fully accept my instructions.” Then I called Tamala Krsna, Brahmananda, Bhagavan, Kirtanananda, and so many others, and I told them, “Don’t quarrel after his departure. You should not think that he will die. A Guru like him never dies. He is always in this world. He is eternally present. So if you want to serve him, you should try to preach his mission all over the world – as he wanted. Don’t quarrel for position, name and fame, wealth, or disciples. I know that after the disappearance of a high class of acarya, some quarrel, and some problems come. But I think that you are qualified persons, and you should therefore not quarrel for all these things. Try to give respect to all the disciples of Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja, regardless of whether they are senior or junior. You should be very liberal to all, and then you can protect his mission. Otherwise you can destroy his whole mission. I know that you have learned something – how to make money. I know that He has trained you all how, very easily, in a moment, to make so much money. But I think that you’ll have to learn more.”

His Real Mission

“You will have to learn his intrinsic moods, why he descended here from the transcendental world, and what his mission was. You should try to understand this. His mission was the same as that of Mahaprabhu. And they both did it through sankirtana.

anarpita-carim cirat karunayavatirnah kalau
samarpayitum unnatojjvala-rasam sva-bhakti-sriyam
harih purata-sundara-dyuti-kadamba-sandipitah
sada hrdaya-kandare sphuratu vah saci-nandanah
(Caitanya-caritamrta Adi-lila 1.4)

[“May the Supreme Lord who is known as the son of Srimati Saci-devi be transcendentally situated in the innermost chambers of your heart. Resplendent with the radiance of molten gold, He has appeared in the Age of Kali by His causeless mercy to bestow what no incarnation has ever offered before: the most sublime and radiant mellow of devotional service, the mellow of conjugal love.”]

“You know what kirtana is, but you do not know what real kirtana of the heart is. You do not know what the pure name is. If the pure name manifests, a man is totally changed. Love and affection comes for all, even for creepers, trees and everything else. There will be no quarreling, and then you will be:

trnad api sunicena
taror api sahisnuna
amanina manadena
kirtaniyah sada hari
(Caitanya-caritamrta Adi-lila 17. 31)

[“One should chant the holy name of the Lord in a humble state of mind, thinking oneself lower than the straw in the street; one should be more tolerant than a tree, devoid of all sense of false prestige and should be ready to offer all respects to others. In such a state of mind one can chant the holy name of the Lord constantly.”]

“Then I will think that you know his intrinsic mood and you are following that.”

If they will honor all devotees, I think that all will return back to Godhead. But if they are not giving honor and respect to the devotees, no one will join them. Even a dog knows. If you will call a dog, “Oh here, here, here,” he will come. All can understand if you have bhakti in your heart and honor for all devotees.

As Srila Rupa Gosvami has told:

krsneti yasya giri tam manasadriyeta
diksasti cet pranatibhis ca bhajantam isam
susrusaya bhajana-vijnam ananyam anya-
nindadi-sunya-hrdam ipsita-sanga-labdhya
(Nectar of Instruction, Text 5)

[“One should mentally honor the devotee who chants the holy name of Lord Krsna, one should offer humble obeisances to the devotee who has undergone spiritual initiation and is engaged in worshiping the Deity, and one should associate with and faithfully serve that pure devotee who is advanced in undeviated devotional service and whose heart is completely devoid of the propensity to criticize others.”]

We should try to honor all, according to their qualification in bhakti, and then everyone will be trained and no one will fall. Otherwise, all are going to fall down. If anyone has a strong personality like your Prabhupada, serving gurudeva and preaching like him, he will be a very high class of devotee.

So it was here, on this day that your Prabhupada took the renounced order, and he preached over the entire world in a couple of years. This miracle has not been seen before. He was one of the arms of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada and Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura, and they predicted his coming. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura has written, “I think that within a very few years, thousands of western devotees, wearing sikhas, tulasi malas and chanting Hare Krsna, will join Indian devotees. Both will chant and dance together.” This is what we are now seeing everywhere.

So we should chant and remember in the proper line, and all other things will come automatically. The maha-mantra, Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, are Radha and Krsna Themselves, and Mahaprabhu Himself. If we are chanting and remembering with sadacara, we will achieve the goal very soon. Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja is showering his blessings upon all those who, although having left Krsna consciousness, are now coming again to this Krsna consciousness movement.

The Real Meaning of ISKCON

What is the real meaning of ISKCON, International Society for Krishna Consciousness?

krsna-bhakti-rasa-bhavita matih
kriyatam yadi kuto ’pi labhyate
tatra laulyam api mulyam ekalam
janma-koti-sukrtair na labhyate
(Caitanya-caritamrta Madhya-lila 8.70)

[“Pure devotional service in Krsna consciousness cannot be had even by pious activity in hundreds and thousands of lives. It can be attained only by paying one price – that is, intense greed to obtain it. If it is available somewhere, one must purchase it without delay.”]

If anyone is following this principle, then he is an ISKCON member in the real sense; otherwise not.

Gaura-premanande!

[Erratum: In the Moscow Tour Report which was sent to you a couple of weeks ago, it is stated: Srila Narayana Gosvami Maharaja: "....As far as you are concerned, you are not admitted in the class of diksa, and it may take time to complete of the diksa process." The word "not" was a typographical error. It should say "now." The sentence should read: "...As far as you are concerned, you are now admitted in the class of diksa, and it may take time to complete the diksa process."]

The Real Threat to ISKCON

http://backtobhakti.com/2010/09/the-real-threat-to-iskcon/

By Brajendranandana dasa.

This article is an appeal to the leaders of ISKCON to be alert to a very serious danger that is attacking the very heart and soul of the institution. I remember with so much affection so many of you that I had the chance to serve with for many years. You were serving Prabhupada’s mission with your heart and soul and were also dealing with devotees in a very caring manner. I trust that your mood and intentions are still the same, unless the bewilderment of adoration and prastishta has taken its toll. We all know how challenging it is to remain unaffected when so many young devotees are touching our feet and praising us. It’s especially dangerous when we’re not in the association of superior Vaisnavas who can cut our pride and keep us on track.

Personally, I would still be connected with ISKCON, but in 1996 I was told by the temple president of New York, when I was visiting there with my wife and children, that if I attended the classes given by Srila Narayana Gosvami Maharaja, who was in New York at that time, my family and I would have to leave the temple. I had already had the good fortune of hearing from Srila Narayana Gosvami Maharaja when he visited our small village in Badger California a month or so before. Thus, I had my own personal experience of how much he inspires in the heart a deeper and clearer understanding of the true mission of our Srila Prabhupada. Only a pure devotee can truly understand the heart of another pure devotee. Since I was forced to choose between the “substance” and the “form,” – that is, between the current of pure bhakti so mercifully brought to us by Srila Prabhupada, and the buildings and bricks – I regretfully left the temple with my family. Since then, I’ve been verbally and physically attacked on several occasions by irate devotees asking me, “Why did you leave Srila Prabhupada?”

~ Destroyed From Within ~

Prabhupada had told us on numerous occasions that ISKCON can only be destroyed from within. The Catholic Church is now self-destructing due to having neglected to deal directly with the insidious disease that was rampant among its priests and leaders. ISKCON eventually removed homosexual and paedophile “gurus” after they had done their damage. But the most grievous sin is that of offending a pure Vaisnava. I regret to say that ISKCON has a very poor track record in dealing with such a serious issue. During the early years after Prabhupada had departed from our vision, Srila Bhakti Raksaka Sridhar Gosvami Maharaja was trying to help us, as sanctioned by Prabhupada. At that time, some of the ISKCON leaders committed shameful offenses at his feet. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura had given the name “Bhakti Raksaka” (guardian of devotion) to Srila Sridhara Gosvami Maharaja in light of his purity, exalted Vaisnava qualities, and his ability to present and defend the pure teachings coming in our disciplic line from Srila Rupa Goswami.

Three of the most outspoken offenders toward Maharaja fell down to different varieties of inappropriate sexual behaviour. Two of those “gurus” had to spend time in jail. Thousands of disciples were left with their faith shattered and their hearts broken. Some time later, ISKCON issued a letter of apology for its offences to Srila Sridhar Gosvami Maharaja. But he had already departed from our presence and entered into nitya-lila. Also, so many efforts were made by some parties to disrupt the preaching of another pure Vaisnava, Srila Gaura Govinda Maharaja. Many offences were also committed at his lotus feet. And now history seems to be repeating itself.

Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja was personally asked by our Prabhupada, during his final days with us, to help his disciples. Numerous leaders (gurus and GBC members) from ISKCON sat at his feet for several years, making submissive inquiry as siksa disciples. Maharaja very mercifully and liberally gave his time and energy to help them. And why shouldn’t they approach him?

giving siksa

In Adi-lila, chapter one, of Sri Caitanya-caritamrta, in his purport to Text 35, after having explained that siksa- and diksa-guru are equally worshipful manifestations of the lord, Prabhupada states:

“If one thinks he is above consulting anyone else, including a spiritual master, he is at once an offender at the lotus feet of the Lord… Sri Jiva Goswami advises that one not accept a spiritual master in terms of hereditary or ecclesiastical conventions. One should simply try to find a genuinely qualified spiritual master for real advancement in spiritual understanding.”

We’ve had our “zonal” gurus, our ecclesiastically nominated and elected gurus, but we won’t let pure devotee gurus enter our temples.

~ “Give Him Up or Lose Your Standing” ~

After some time, some elements of ISKCON were able to put through an ultimatum to the so-called “deviated” ISKCON leaders who were taking siksa from Maharaja: “Give up Srila Narayana Gosvami Maharaja or lose your standing in the institution.” The reasons they gave were so absurd and so offensive that to repeat them just gives them some undeserved energy. These “deviant” leaders made serious efforts to defend Srila Narayana Gosvami Maharaja. They attested to how he had helped them so much in their understanding of Prabhupada’s mission, and that the accusations of the GBC were unfounded. One devotee amongst them overtly expressed his “love” for Srila Narayana Gosvami Maharaja.

Eventually those devotees succumbed to institutional pressure. Later on, some of them even became strongly opposed to anyone else hearing from their former siksa-guru, who they once said had helped them so much. Now some crooked persons are saying that Srila Prabhupada never even asked Srila Narayana Gosvami Maharaja to help his disciples. And some are dangerously projecting their own base conditioned qualities and motivations onto the character of a pure Vaisnava, whose only intention is to help us.

He doesn’t need followers or disciples. He has Krsna. And our Prabhupada has an affectionate spiritual relationship with him on a level beyond our adhikara to comprehend. Yet conditioned souls, in the name of Prabhupada, hold meetings to determine if he can visit ISKCON temples.

A slick California politician, in the guise of a devotee, repeatedly, through written and spoken word, blasphemes such a pure Vaisnava, and in the name of ISKCON tries to draw others into his twisted vision. Are you okay with this? Such a fool is he that even in the presence of Srila Narayana Gosvami Maharaja, as an ISKCON representative, he can’t conceal his arrogance and offensive mentality. Is this who you want to represent you?

Another devotee, who sat at the feet of Srila Narayana Gosvami Maharaja for years and even expressed his “love” for him, later on actively opposed Maharaja’s preaching. This same devotee, although glorified by many for the service he did for Prabhupada, also offended an endless list of devotees, junior and senior, by his harsh, heavy-handed, and calculative dealings. I was there. I saw it. Didn’t you?

Later, he tragically and violently died in a car accident. His body, in a state of rigor mortis, was placed in a grave on Prabhupada’s sacred tirtha, and it is considered a “samadhi”.

One of the most outspoken offenders at the feet of Srila Narayana Gosvami Maharaja suffered a violent stroke, which has seriously impeded his capacity to speak or even to move. Is this a coincidence? Don’t you see the connection? Will one of you please cry out, “The emperor has no clothes!”

Srila Narayana Gosvami Maharaja is not a threat to ISKCON. On the contrary, he would only infuse the hearts of all its members with the current of pure bhakti that our Prabhupada so fervently wants for us. Any conditioned soul off the street can enter your temples, but he cannot. Again, he doesn’t want or need your disciples, but as a pure Vaisnava who weeps for the plight of fallen souls like us, he will give shelter to those who are dispossessed of their home in ISKCON or who have lost faith in leaders who are implicated, at least by inaction, in offending pure Vaisnavas.

~ The Hour is Late ~

The hour is already late. Srila Narayana Gosvami Maharaja will not be travelling anymore, so your temples are “safe.” But, “better late than never.” Maharaja is still present amongst us. You can still fall at his feet and beg forgiveness for any offences committed, even by omission. If not as a collective body, at least individually, for your own spiritual well-being, genuinely approach him. He is extremely merciful and forgiving. One guru in ISKCON acknowledged that offences have been committed to Maharaja but said, “I am just one man.” But everything starts with “one man.”

Some of you are reading Maharaja’s books and even drawing from them in your classes. Some of your former disciples have mentioned this. One of your leaders, who sat at Maharaja’s feet, wrote a book, Venu Gita, which is way beyond his realization and based largely on what he had heard from Srila Narayana Gosvami Maharaja. But he gives no acknowledgement to Maharaja in the book. His book is then sold in ISKCON centres worldwide, while Maharaja is falsely accused of speaking differently from Prabhupada. Speak out against these offenses. You may have your position in ISKCON become a little less comfortable, but you will become closer to Prabhupada’s heart by asserting your integrity as his disciple and by making a stand for the purity of his ISKCON.

Please remember, “The enemy is within.” If you don’t individually and collectively speak out against these aparadhas, then you will all become implicated and the disease will spread like a cancer, and in time ISKCON will sadly become another deviant branch of the Caitanya tree. I’m not anticipating that someone on my low level of development in bhakti is powerful enough to change hearts. Mainly I write for my own purification and my inner necessity to take a stand against offences to my guardians and holy masters, Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja, as well as the whole Gaudiya Vaisnava line which they so wonderfully represent.

Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada once said, “The nature of a religious institution is that after the departure of its preceptor, the institution that he began tends to become an end in itself.” Is this what we want for ISKCON? In Srimad Bhagavatam, 4th Canto, Chapter 28, Prabhupada forewarns us:

“…Unfortunately, when the acarya disappears, rogues and non-devotees take advantage and immediately begin to introduce unauthorized principles in the name of so-called svamis… and so on. The main business of human society is to think of the Supreme Personality of Godhead at all times, to become His devotees, to worship the Supreme Lord and to bow down before him. The acarya establishes these principles, but when he disappears, things once again become disordered. The perfect disciples of the acarya try to relieve the situation by sincerely following the instructions of the spiritual master.”

Factually, no one has done more to clarify, rescue, preserve, and spread the true mission of our Srila Prabhupada than Srila Narayana Gosvami Maharaja.

~ “But You Know Better” ~

In the 1970’s, the GBC in the Brooklyn temple on Henry Street somehow became bewildered by a woman with demoniac tendencies and placed her in charge of the women’s asrama. By her influence, abominable things were offered to the Deities. Also serious emotional abuses were committed to the ladies in the asrama. Everything later came out and both the GBC and his lady were removed from the scene. During Prabhupada’s subsequent visit to New York, he was discussing the matter with one of his senior New York disciples. Indicating the general devotees in the temple, he said, “They are innocent, but you know better. You should have done something.”

On behalf of Srila Prabhupada, on behalf of his followers who endeavoured heart and soul to serve him for many years in ISKCON, and on behalf of your own followers who have invested their lives and faith in you, please address the real threat that is growing perniciously within the body of ISKCON. And as true leaders, who desire to follow Srila Prabhupada, please accept his advice and take help from Srila Narayana Gosvami Maharaja. Don’t let ISKCON be destroyed by the enemies within.

I end here, praying at the lotus feet of my divine masters to protect me from my own deep-rooted tendencies toward arrogance and pride. Please keep me safely sheltered as one of the tiny particles of dust at your lotus feet.

Your fallen, Brajendranandana dasa

Dandavat Pranams Brajendranandana das;

Here! Here! Let the truth be told. This is the only salvation for the conditioned souls. The search for the truth is the most noble endeavor of the living entity lost in this miserable world. The Truth is actually a person…Sri Krishna. To find Sri Krishna we must approach that person who has seen the truth(Sri Krishna). Who is that person? That is Sri Guru, the external manifestation of the truth(Sri Krishna). Without this personality we have no access, no right, no ability, no knowledge, no qualification for approaching the Absolute Truth. A famous Physicist recently said “Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing and why the universe exists and why we exist.” This is still being claimed as scientific proof that there is no God. This is similar to the argument that we do not need any help from others because we have our Prabhupada, we have his books, we can do it ourselves. This is blatant impersonalism. Everything must come from a person. Spirit before matter. Guru before enlightenment. Sri Guru must always be present to reveal the truth. He does not come once as in Jesus Christ and never again. The parampara is evidence of this unbroken connection to the Absolute Truth. This is the glory of Srila Narayana Maharaja, he is empowered by Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami to continue this line of pure vaishnavas. Anyone with a sesame seed of intelligence can see the connection between these two great Maha Bhagavats. Only those who harbor selfish motivations see Srila Gurudeva in the light of their own conditioning. This will not stand the test of time. The mere hint of offense to a pure Vaishnava immediately contaminates the heart of the aspiring devotee. If this offensive mentality becomes institutional canon then all is lost.

Please, all of you fortunate souls who were graced by a moments association with Srila Prabhupada, look deep into your hearts and admit you have much to learn and it can not be done merely by reading scripture and following the rules and regulations. This path is illuminated by the effulgence of the pure vaishnava and his Hari Katha. There really is no other way. Sorry. This is not a go-it-alone process. This is not your Horatio Alger story of getting the combination right and finding success and wealth. This is a process of submission to Sri Guru in all his many forms. He comes again and again just like the waves of the ocean. Don’t think that the great ride you had years ago is going to come again. The world is in constant flux and so Sri Guru will also come in many forms that do not look like the one you used to know. Be always on the look out for Sri Guru. He will not come with a big fan fare. He will sneak up on you when you least expect it. Srila Prabupada did this to the hippies of yesteryear. They had no idea who he was until they were purified enough by his association and from hearing his Hari Katha. The same goes for Srila Narayana Maharaja. He did not announce his coming. He just showed up and began preaching pure Krishna Consciousness. Those who sincerely took his association are now preaching very strongly the message of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Srila Gurudeva has said….”If someone feels proud, thinking, “I have become guru,” then he is not a guru at all. A guru never makes disciples; rather he transforms others into guru”. One who is a real guru does not even try to become a guru.

Take heed all of you great souls who have come to this movement of Lord Chaitanya’s. Be still and hear the message of the Mahajana’s. This is the only method for attaining the truth(Sri Krishna). We all must be ANUGATA, under the shelter of Sri Guru.

“First Remember Him And Then Me” – Srila Narayana Maharaja about Srila Prabhupada

Transcript from an address by Srila Narayana Goswami Maharaja to his disciples (dated 1999-01-04):

If I have helped you to remember Swamiji, your Prabhupada, Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja, then my preaching is successful. And if I’ve not remembered Swamiji, then my preaching is very few ….. (?) Only I’ve come to [give] this; that you should all remember this very high class of Vaisnava devotee sent by Krishna Himself and Caitanya Mahaprabhu. [He is] …the disciple of, a very attentive devotee of Srila Bhakitsiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Thakur. So you should always remember him.

If you are not remembering him and doing bhakti, I think that is not good. That is not…, that is bogus. He is the backbone of bhakti in the Western and Eastern countries. So you should always remember him. First remember him, and then me. Then I will think that my preaching is successful.
